Urban Fashion for Inverted Triangle Shape Full Figure Women
This is from my experience
I first would like to apologize for not being able to write about urban fashions with regard to other full figure shape types. Inverted triangle is the shape I have personal experience with.
I have started a page for Full Bust Fashions. You may be interested in that, but Urban Fashions, especially on sale with a discount, how I usually purchase mine, tend to be more affordable. Triangle
Current Inverted Triangle Finds!
A week or so ago, Baby Phat had me scared, as I found a dearth of my favorite style of theirs; Plus Size Skinny Jeans. THEY ARE BACK, but only in new arrivals currently.
Click on these lipstick pink twill skinny jeans and you will find them in cherry red and optic white in sizes 14 to 26 in New Arrivals. These style feature a, (subtle!), tonal, or monochromatic, rhinestone Baby Phat logo cat at their back pocket.

You will find a bit more on Baby Phat Skinny Jeans a bit further down the page.
Some times there is little to recommend in New Arrivals...
Some sale styles
Having an inverted triangle shape, you are likely top heavy to some extent. This usually means the tops, jackets and dresses that fit our chests, have much larger waists and hips than we need. making us look pregnant, or very sloppy. Still there are some rare finds in plus size fashion that work for us!
Dereon's Lucky Star Stretch Poplin plus size blouses below also come in black, lipstick red and this white, in sizes 1X to 3X. These blouses are often on sale! This week, (1/31/12), their price is $28!

These tops feature a satin self tie belt. One could possibly take-up a bit of waist slack, get a better fit at the waist and perhaps, down a bit, by making a back belt of tie, out of the satin belt that comes with this style. One could sew it into the side seams. This could create create a more flattering, fitted front look!
Here is another, on sale, princess seamed front and back, Dereon cotton / spandex blouse for us.
Currently on sale for $14, available in white in sizes 1X and 2X, in this purple, sadly down to just size 2X...

Jeans that make the most of our shape
I highly recommend Baby Phat Skinny Jeans for making the most of a largish tummy combined with narrow hips and backside figure. Or as my daughter puts it, even you look good in those jeans! (I am simply not a good looking woman).
Here is a link to plus size jeans at Baby Phat. Some newer styles have not made it here at this writing, but can be found in New Arrivals at Baby Phat!

Click on these black Baby Phat jeans to go to their plus size bottoms sale section, which has more full figure skinny jeans, and of course, better prices!

Not an urban style, yet one wants swimwear
If you have a inverted triangle shape, you might have already given up on one piece swimwear. I know I did.
However, I have read good reviews from full figure women, who reviewed other adjustable leg cut Fantasie one piece swimwear styles. This style featured below just happens to be one that is in stock in most sizes, with excellent reviews from full busted women so far.
This swimsuit comes in bra sizes 34 - 44 D, DD, E, F, FF; 34 - 40 G, GG, H, HH, J. Just order Fantasie swimwear by your bra size. I have been wearing their tankini tops for years!
These swimsuits are on sale at $50 off, in stock and likely one of Bigger Bras' numerous discounts, you will find a link to in our right column, can be applied to them!

If you check out the Fantasie swimwear styles at Bigger Bras, (where clicking on this suit will take you to), I would stick to the newer styles at the top of their swimwear page. My last one piece suit was their Fiji one. It may have changed over the years, and I am only 5 ft. 1.5 in., but unless you do not mind making returns, I wear their Fiji swimsuit with a swim skirt on top, to hide the baggy bottom.
Short Shorts
Plus size short shorts are important to me, at least part of the year. I decided to give them their own page. You can find out who currently has them on our plus size shorts page!
Except for Baby Phat, all other urban fashion stores I follow have plus size capri and Bermuda shorts. Bermuda shorts and Capri do nothing much for an inverted triangle shaped women. They are especially crummy on a petite women. We tend to have nice legs, and well worth showing!
Torrid has short shorts in both polished and trendier denim styles. You will find them their bottoms section, in a wide variety of styles, as well as currently in new arrivals. You will find links to those sections in the right column.
1/2012 You will find these, and other short shorts in Clearance at Torrid.

What I mean by Inverted Triangle
I believe it means:
- Having smallish backside, and hips
- Relatively slender arms and legs
- Large breasts and / or shoulders
- With regard to being full figured, most of our extra weight is up front, in our bellies, guts, and around our waists a bit too.
The latter makes for a no waist look, which, owing to our larger busts and / or shoulders, is nearly completely handled by the waist accenting, or creating styles of Kiyonna's tops and dresses!
what seems not to work at all:
- large shaped tops, and dresses, with or without leggings underneath.
The effect, owing to the broader upper torso is we look pregnant or just plane large.
Unless the waistline is further defined below the your bustline, once again, you just look pregnant.
Also what did not work: Blouses with smocking just at our waists. No, this just accentuates our width. Loved the color, and design, but had to send them back...
What I have found that works in Urban Wear styles
However, and this is what comes up again and again in urban fashions, fitted all the way, or from an empire waist down, really really works!
Like this empire waist, smocked back plus size sundress / jumper, and these plus size blouses to your right.
These dresses and tops are just picture of Baby Phat styles that are out of stock, that work well on my triangle shape, and may show up at eBay stores.

Even in this knit below, with leggings, an extreme close fit, yet even with a discernable gut, belly and hips, it still looks better than a loose top with leggings!

So far my experience, urban fashion wise, is just with Baby Phat plus size jeans, tops, blouses and dresses.
So even if you have your doubts, try form fitting styles from the waist down. Urban fashion designers like Baby Phat, Apple Bottoms and some Dereon and Rocawear styles come up with this quite often.
Size note: I noticed that Apple Bottoms measurements for between size 1X and 2X tops and dresses are about a size smaller than Baby Phat's. As in inches given at bust and waist per sizes. I do hope to get to try Apple Bottoms fashions this year. If I do, I will put my results here too.
In general; with all your weight up front, and especially above your waist, wear great full figure bras, and take good care of them!
Plus Size Jeans and the Inverted Triangle Shape
So far I have only tired Baby Phat plus size jeans, and now their regular women's size leggings. Since adulthood, jeans wise, I have almost worn nothing but Levis. Since trying Baby Phat Plus Size Jeans, those days are gone. As in, if I ever clean the attic, my old levis will be stored there, or perhaps become cut offs!
I highly recommend Baby Phat Plus Size Jeans for Inverted Triangle shaped women.
*They fit close to our comparatively skinny legs, still leaving; room to breath. They, fresh out of the wash, hug a smallish backside, while not cutting into your front!
Now, jeans wise, and I am a Jeans and T-shirt woman most hours of most days, I wear nothing but Baby Phat Plus Size Skinny Jeans. Theses are my most recent, now 3rd, pair of Baby Phat skinny jeans! I got mine at one of their several hour, 50% off sales I am always on the look out for and then post on our plus size fashion blog.
These are just a picture of one of the Baby Phat Skinny Jeans style that works for me, with my triangle shape. You can use this Shop BabyPhat.com link to browse current styles!

All jeans by Baby Phat seem to have a bit of spandex. Their plus size size charts, nicely located at each plus size item's description, are true to my tape measure! Their Women's, not plus, and in the past were called Juniors, are not!
Here is a me vs. Baby Phat Plus Size Chart comparison for jeans:
Baby Phat for size 14, what I wear
waist = 37 in.
Hips 44 in.
Me
waist = 35 - 36 in.
Gut = 42 in. I usually have to consider this measurement
Hips = 40 - 41 in.
*If you wear them several times between washing, the back sides do become loose. This lead me to try their Women's jeans
So I tried another elusive Baby Phat, on sale, Women's size 13 Slim Skinny Leggings below. They are still, (3/29/11), there, in size 13 too, for $30!
Here is Baby Phat's measurements for a Women's size 13: Waist = 32.5 in. Hips = 42.5 in.
I so do not have a 32 or even 33 inch waist, yet these fit so easily, I may yet try their Women's size 11, which is actually closer to my hip size of 41 in.

These are not supper stretchy leggings either, rather more like beautifully fitted, especially slender slacks!
These are the first Baby Phat's Women's fashions, as opposed to plus size fashions I have tried so far.
Iffy Styles for this shape
like it says under Softening Your Shoulders in this How to Dress an Inverted Triangle Body Type, 2010 at Your Fab Look Blog, You want to go easy on the attention to shoulder details. Having said that;
I also highly recommend this wrap front top, whose smooth front makes little of your belly! Well it does mine! However, like the blue ruffled knit top pictured above, I have to be in the right mood to wear it. Also, this is another job for only your most uplifting bras! Drawing so much attention to your shoulders, or bust, pretty much demands the best bust support you have, and posture!

(Consider this shirt just a picture, or an archive, because it is out of stock now, sorry, 8/16/10).
The above linked to blog post also suggests defining your waist. I just want to say, save your trips to the UPS store and post office: If the top or dress is not defining your torso both above and below your waist, either with tailoring, adjustable back or side ties, smocking, or back smocking, Skip IT!
Other full figure women's body shapes
Perhaps a differently shaped reader would like to share her experiences with fashion, urban or other wise with us here. If so, just post a comment to that effect on any posting of our plus size fashion blog! I would be happy to get your input!
